Bratislava names new bridge 'Apollo'
June 29, 2005 - The City of Bratislava deputies voted to name the fifth
bridge the Apollo bridge, after the historic name of a local oil
refinery, in accord with the results of several informal public votes.
The bridge being built with the help of EBRD funding between the
Kosicka street on the left bank and the former Lido area in Petrzalka
is to be completed by September 2005.
Other names under
discussion were John Paul II bridge after the late pope and Jozef
Murgas bridge after a late 19th, early 20th century Slovak inventor,
who invented the wireless telegraph.
The construction process
involved a rare maneouver, when the 5,240 tonne structure with a span
of about 230 metres was turned across the Danube river using several
ships onto a pillar about 40 metres from the right bank, while river
traffic had been suspended.
