Bratislava ranks 48th most expensive city in the world in Mercer HR survey

Bratislava ranks the 48th most expensive city in the world for expatriates to live in, down from the 31st place last year, in the 2006 Mercer HR Cost of Living Report.

Bratislava ranks on par with Indonesia's Jakarta and one place ahead of Prague, the capital of the neighbouring Czech Republic.

The ranking of the life expenses in 144 metropolitan cities from around the world compares the costs of alcohol and tobacco, clothing and footwear, domestic services, food at home, food away from home, health and personal care, household supplies, sports and leisure, transportation and utilities in three cost-of-living indices to accommodate differences in shopping habits.

The world's most expensive city Moscow replaces last year 'winner' Tokyo. The lowest position in the ranking was taken by Asuncion in Paraguay. Cities ranked second, third, and fourth are situated in Asia (Seoul, Tokyo, Honk Kong).

Survey provides detailed prices for different sized apartments and houses; furnished and unfurnished; in good, better and the best residential areas also if monthly rental is for an apartment with one to four bedrooms or house with three to four bedrooms.

Many US cities have risen in the 2006 rankings due to the strength of the american dollar. On the other hand, most Eastern European cities, such as Bratislava (2005 - 89.9, 2006 - 82.4) have dropped sharply in the rankings due to the devaluation of local currencies against the US dollar.

Prague fell from 28th (90.8) to 50th (82.1) place, Vienna from 16th (97.8) to 21st (89.8), Budapest from 24th (93.3) to 65th (82.2), Warsaw rom 27th (91.5) to 62nd (80.4).
