Wizz Air Considering Bratislava Expansion to Replace Skyeurope - SME
Updated July 1, 2009 - Wizz Air announces Bratislava - Rome flights
Bratislava, June 30, 2009 (Bratislava-City.sk) - Hungary-based low-cost air carrier Wizz Air is in talks with the Bratislava Airport about expanding to Slovakia in the near future, news portal of the Slovak daily Sme reported on Tuesday.
Bratislava Airport spokeswoman Dana Madunicka confirmed indirectly: "Milan Rastislav Stefanik Airport is discussing possible cooperation with several carriers, not only Wizz Air. It is too early to discuss conclusions."
Sme cited "credible sources", attributing the move to Wizz Air's efforts to benefit from the difficulties of Bratislava-based Skyeurope. Skyeurope was granted bankruptcy protection by a Bratislava court earlier in June.
Skyeurope's planes were held up in several European airports since the bankruptcy but the airline said it was due to operational reasons and not related to efforts to collect on overdue payments.
